Story by Krishnamohan Yagneswaran

The journey to Azhur was somber. The once-thriving village lay in ruins, its fields scorched, homes reduced to smoldering husks, and its air heavy with ash and sorrow. Arjun and his allies paused at the village's edge, taking in the scene of devastation.

Maya broke the silence. "Kaalan leaves nothing but pain in his wake. This could've been any of our homes."

Arjun clenched his fists. "And it will be if we don't stop him."

The Survivors of Azhur

As they ventured deeper into the ruins, faint movement caught their eyes. A young woman emerged from the shadows, her face smudged with ash but her eyes sharp and defiant.

"I wouldn't go any further," she warned. "The ground is cursed here. Kaalan's magic lingers."

The group exchanged glances before Arjun stepped forward. "Who are you?"

"My name is Selvi," she replied. "I'm one of the few left after... after they came." Her voice faltered, but she quickly steadied herself. "If you're here to fight Kaalan, you'll need more than courage. I can help you navigate what's left of this place."

Selvi led them through the ruins, pointing out traps left by Kaalan's forces and explaining the village's tragic history. Among the rubble, they found another survivor—an elderly scholar named Nambi, sitting amidst a collection of salvaged scrolls and books.

"I've been waiting for someone like you," Nambi said, his gaze fixed on Arjun. "The Kavasam has returned, as it always does in times of great peril."

Tales of the Kavasam and the Shadow Forge

That night, gathered around a small fire, Nambi shared his knowledge.

"Long ago, Kaalan's ancestors wielded dark powers that threatened the balance of the world," he began. "It was the Kavasam, guided by a chosen warrior, that sealed them away. But such power comes at a cost. The Kavasam's curse ensures that its bearer must prove their worth with every step."

Arjun frowned. "Why does it fight me? Why does it make everything harder?"

"It does not fight you, young warrior," Nambi explained. "It shapes you. Only those who endure its trials can wield it fully. But beware—Kaalan's forces are not idle. They draw strength from the Shadow Forge, a place of pure corruption where weapons like the Soolam of Shadows are crafted."

Selvi added, "The forge twists not only metal but the hearts of its wielders. The weapons grow stronger as their users feed them with rage and despair. That's why Kaalan's army is so dangerous—they fight without mercy because they've lost all else."

A New Ally

Moved by the stories and the resolve in Arjun's eyes, Selvi made her decision.

"I'll join you," she said firmly. "I've lost everything to Kaalan, but I still have my life. I can scout ahead, find paths no one else would dare take, and help you strike where it hurts most."

Nambi, though too old to fight, also pledged his support. "I may not wield a sword, but knowledge is its own weapon. If you'll allow me, I'll guide you with what I know of Kaalan's past and the secrets of the Kavasam."

Arjun nodded, grateful for their help. "Together, we'll bring this fight to Kaalan. He's taken too much from too many."

The Ashes Speak

Before leaving Azhur, the group uncovered a crucial clue. In the remains of the village's temple, they found a fragment of an ancient map, burned at the edges but still legible. Nambi examined it closely.

"This marks the location of the Shadow Forge," he said, his voice grim. "It lies far to the north, in the heart of the Shadhal Mountains. If you're to weaken Kaalan's grip, that's where you must go."

The revelation set their course, but it also brought new dangers. The path to the forge would be perilous, and Kaalan's forces would not let them approach without a fight.

The Weight of Loss

As they prepared to leave, Arjun stood amidst the ruins, reflecting on the cost of Kaalan's conquest. Selvi approached, her expression a mix of sadness and determination.

"You're different from the others who've come through here," she said. "Most just look for treasure or run at the first sign of danger. But you... you actually care."

Arjun nodded. "This isn't just about me or my village anymore. It's about everyone Kaalan has hurt. I can't let this happen again."

Selvi placed a hand on his shoulder. "Then let's make sure it doesn't."

The Journey Continues

With new allies and a clearer path, the group left the Village of Ashes. The weight of their mission pressed heavily on their shoulders, but so too did their resolve. The journey to the Shadow Forge would test them like never before, but together, they carried the hope of all who had suffered under Kaalan's reign.

As the winds scattered the ashes of Azhur into the night sky, Arjun felt a renewed sense of purpose. The fight was far from over, but with every step, he drew closer to the destiny that awaited him—and to the reckoning that Kaalan would face.
