Story by Krishnamohan Yagneswaran
The journey to the Shadow Forge led Arjun and his companions to Vaanaru Canyon, a treacherous stretch of jagged cliffs and narrow pathways blanketed by a dense, poisonous mist. Stories of this canyon spoke of no return, for it was guarded by the fearsome Naga Sentries, serpentine creatures of immense cunning and strength who served as Kaalan's enforcers.
The First Signs of Corruption
As the group entered the canyon, the effects of the Kavasam's curse began to manifest more strongly in Arjun. The once-fleeting visions of past wielders now came unbidden, consuming his thoughts and haunting his dreams. Their voices whispered doubts into his mind.
"You are not strong enough to wield me," the Kavasam seemed to hiss, its voice cold and unforgiving. "You will fail as they all have."
Arjun shook his head, trying to banish the voices, but their weight pressed down on him. His temper flared more easily, and even minor disagreements with his allies began to spiral into heated arguments.
"Arjun, you need to stay focused," Maya said, her tone firm but concerned. "This canyon isn't just dangerous because of its mist. The Naga Sentries are relentless, and we can't afford distractions."
"Don't tell me how to fight!" Arjun snapped, his voice sharper than he intended. Maya flinched but held her ground, her hand instinctively brushing the string of her bow.
Kiran, ever the peacemaker, stepped between them. "Both of you, calm down. This isn't the time to let emotions get the better of us. The canyon will exploit any weakness."
Arjun sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry. I... I don't know what's wrong with me. It's like I can't control it."
The Poisonous Mist
As they descended into the canyon, the poisonous mist began to take its toll. Breathing became labored, and their vision blurred. Nambi, the elder scholar, handed out small cloths soaked in a bitter-smelling herbal solution.
"Keep these over your mouths," he instructed. "It won't completely block the poison, but it will slow its effects."
Selvi, the scout, moved cautiously ahead, her sharp eyes scanning for traps or movement in the mist. "The Naga Sentries won't attack all at once," she whispered. "They're patient hunters. They'll pick us off one by one if we're not careful."
Her warning proved prophetic. As the group crossed a narrow ledge, a hissing sound echoed through the canyon. A shadow moved in the mist, and before they could react, one of the Naga Sentries struck. Its gleaming fangs narrowly missed Maya, who rolled aside and fired an arrow, her aim true. The arrow lodged in the creature's scaled neck, but it only enraged the beast.
The Fight with the Naga Sentries
The group was quickly surrounded by the serpentine guardians. The Naga Sentries were as terrifying as the legends described—towering creatures with the bodies of snakes and the torsos of warriors. Their eyes glowed an eerie green, and their weapons dripped with venom.
Arjun stepped forward, the Kavasam's power surging through him. His movements became faster, more precise, but with each strike, the curse whispered louder in his mind.
"You're nothing without me," it sneered. "They will all die because of your weakness."
Fueled by both anger and desperation, Arjun fought with reckless abandon, cutting down one Naga after another. But his erratic behavior put his allies in danger. At one point, his blade narrowly missed Selvi as she darted past him to land a killing blow on another sentry.
"Arjun, control yourself!" Maya shouted, firing arrows into the fray.
"I am in control!" he bellowed, though his actions suggested otherwise.
Discovery of the Chandra Pattai
As the battle raged, Kiran noticed a faint, silvery glow emanating from a crevice in the canyon wall. "There's something here!" he called out, dodging a sentry's venom-coated spear.
Maya followed his gaze and sprinted toward the light. Hidden within the rock was a blade unlike any she had seen before. Its hilt was inlaid with moonstone, and its edge shimmered like liquid silver. When she grasped it, a surge of energy flowed through her, and the mist around her seemed to dissipate.
"This must be the Chandra Pattai," she murmured, her voice filled with awe.
The blade pulsed with magic, and as Maya swung it, it released arcs of light that cut through the darkness. The Naga Sentries recoiled, hissing in pain as the blade's power disrupted the dark magic that sustained them.
"Keep them off us!" she shouted, wielding the weapon with newfound confidence.
The Toll of the Kavasam
Despite their combined efforts, the battle took a heavy toll on the group. Arjun's connection to the Kavasam deepened, but so did its grip on his psyche. At one point, he froze in the middle of the fight, overwhelmed by a vision of a past wielder succumbing to madness.
In the vision, the wielder was surrounded by allies turned enemies, their trust shattered by the Kavasam's corruption. "This is your future," the voices taunted.
"Arjun!" Selvi's voice snapped him back to reality. A sentry's spear was mere inches from his chest. He dodged at the last moment, his breathing ragged.
"I... I can't do this," he whispered, panic creeping into his voice.
"Yes, you can," Maya said firmly, placing a hand on his shoulder. The Chandra Pattai in her other hand glowed softly, its light seeming to calm him. "You're not alone, Arjun. We're in this together."
A Narrow Escape
With Maya's newfound weapon and Kiran's quick thinking, the group managed to drive off the remaining Naga Sentries. But they were battered, poisoned, and exhausted.
As they stumbled out of the canyon, the poisonous mist began to thin, revealing a starry sky above. They collapsed onto a grassy ledge, gasping for air.
Nambi examined Arjun closely, his expression grim. "The Kavasam's curse is worsening. If you don't find a way to control it, it will consume you."
Arjun nodded weakly, his eyes filled with doubt. "I thought I was ready for this, but... it's so much harder than I imagined."
"You're stronger than you think," Maya said, her voice gentle but firm. "And we'll face whatever comes next together."
Selvi added, "This canyon was just one of Kaalan's obstacles. If he's going to throw worse at us, we need to be prepared. No more recklessness."
Arjun looked at his allies, their resolve unwavering despite their injuries. He took a deep breath, the weight of the Kavasam still heavy but slightly more bearable with their support.
The Journey Continues
The group pressed on, knowing the worst was yet to come. The Chandra Pattai was a beacon of hope, its light a reminder that even in the darkest times, there was a way forward. But the Kavasam's curse loomed over Arjun, a constant threat to his mission and his sanity.
As they left the canyon behind, the echoes of the Naga Sentries' hisses faded into the night. But Arjun knew that the battle within himself was far from over.
