The Beginning: Blood Transfusion and the Hunter's Contract

The journey of Bloodborne begins with a blood transfusion, marking the Hunter's entry into a world full of suffering and death. This transfusion is more than just a form of medical treatment; it’s part of a contract to sign away the Hunter’s fate in the pursuit of something known as Paleblood. As the Hunter awakens, they’re thrust into a nightmare-like world where strange creatures known as Messengers guide them through the city of Yharnam, a place plagued by the very blood that was supposed to heal its people.

The Hunter’s path leads them to the Hunter’s Dream, a spectral realm where they meet Gehrman, an old man in a wheelchair, and The Doll, a mysterious figure who provides cryptic guidance. Together, they explain that the only way to find Paleblood and escape the Dream is by hunting the beasts that have ravaged Yharnam and ending the plague that has taken over the city.

The Healing Church and the Quest for Truth

The Healing Church is at the center of the plague that consumes Yharnam. This organization practices blood ministration, a method that has turned the citizens of Yharnam into horrific beasts. The Hunter discovers that the Church’s connection to these dark powers lies at the heart of the Nightmare and that bloodshed is not just a matter of survival but a deep-rooted, inescapable part of Yharnam's past.

As the Hunter continues their journey, they uncover the truth about the city and its people, leading them to Byrgenwerth, an ancient school with its own dark secrets. The Hunter’s encounter with Rom, a cosmic entity, reveals the existence of Queen Yharnam, a figure tied to the origins of the Nightmare itself. As the Hunter progresses, they learn that the Nightmare is connected to a race of eldritch beings known as the Great Ones, whose influence has twisted both the land and its people.

The Nightmare's Origins: Yahar'gul and the School of Mensis

The journey leads the Hunter to the hidden village of Yahar'gul, where the School of Mensis worships the Great Ones in an attempt to access otherworldly knowledge. Here, the Hunter faces even more monstrous beings, including The One Reborn, an abomination created in an attempt to form a vessel for the Great Ones. After defeating this creature, the Hunter gains access to the Nightmare of Mensis, where they confront Micolash, the mad head of the School of Mensis.

With Micolash defeated, the Hunter encounters Mergo, an entity connected to the Nightmare's true source. By killing Mergo’s guardian, the Wet Nurse, the Hunter brings an end to Mergo's reign, but the consequences are dire. As the Hunter returns to the Hunter’s Dream, Gehrman offers a choice: to escape the Dream, or to confront the twisted nature of their fate.

Three Possible Endings: Choices in the Hunter’s Dream

At the climax of Bloodborne, the Hunter faces a life-changing decision, with three different endings possible based on the player's actions:

  1. Yharnam Sunrise Ending: Accepting Gehrman’s offer leads to the Hunter’s death, and they awaken in Yharnam as the sun rises, free from the Nightmare’s hold.

  2. Honoring Wishes Ending: Declining Gehrman’s offer results in a fierce battle with the old man, who tries to prevent the Hunter from leaving the Dream. If victorious, the Hunter is embraced by a Great One known as the Moon Presence, and becomes the new caretaker of the Dream, taking Gehrman’s place.

  3. Childhood’s Beginning Ending: For players who refuse Gehrman’s offer and also consume three umbilical cords (formed from Great Ones attempting to reproduce with humans), a secret ending is unlocked. After defeating Gehrman, the Hunter resists the Moon Presence and kills it, transforming into a newborn Great One themselves.

The Old Hunters: A New Nightmare

In The Old Hunters DLC, the Hunter learns about the Hunter’s Nightmare, a new dream realm where hunters who have succumbed to bloodlust are imprisoned. Here, the Hunter encounters Ludwig, a former hunter turned monstrous, and Maria, an old ally who guards the innermost reaches of the Nightmare. As the Hunter delves deeper into the Nightmare, they uncover the tragic truth about the origin of the curse that has plagued the world: it began with the slaughter and experimentation on the villagers of a small fishing hamlet, cursed by their proximity to the corpse of a Great One named Kos.

As the Hunter confronts and defeats the phantom child of Kos, they bring an end to the Nightmare, finally putting to rest the tragic history that gave rise to the horrors of Bloodborne.

Conclusion: The End of the Hunt?

Bloodborne is a game that challenges players not only through its punishing combat but also with its complex, mysterious narrative. From the first blood transfusion to the many horrors the Hunter faces, the story explores themes of blood, death, and the cosmic unknown. Each ending offers a unique interpretation of the Hunter’s fate, leaving players to reflect on their choices and the true nature of the Nightmare. Whether the Hunter becomes the caretaker of the Dream or is consumed by it, Bloodborne remains an unforgettable journey through terror, loss, and the pursuit of something beyond mortal understanding.
