Okay, Final Fantasy VII Remake. I’ll be honest with you—I’ve never played the original Final Fantasy VII. I know, I know. It’s like blasphemy in the gaming world to admit that, but hey, everyone has their own journey, right? But when Final Fantasy VII Remake came out, I knew I had to jump in. The hype was too real, and the game looked absolutely stunning.
Note: Yes, I may have never played the original, but after finishing FFVII Remake, I can safely say it deserves a spot in my list of all-time favorite games. 10/10—Masterpiece in the making.
A Fresh Take on a Classic
Let’s get one thing straight—Final Fantasy VII Remake is not just a remaster. It’s a reimagining of the original. It takes the core of the beloved game and spins it into a whole new experience. Even without the nostalgia of playing the original, I could immediately tell why FFVII was a game changer for its time. The characters, the world-building, and the story are just so rich and immersive.
The Story – A Fight for Midgar
The story follows Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER (basically an elite soldier for an evil corporation, Shinra), who teams up with the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE to take down Shinra. You end up getting caught in a much bigger plot involving Sephiroth, the mysterious antagonist who might just have a more personal vendetta against Cloud than anyone thought.
And trust me, the emotional moments hit hard, even without having the original game’s emotional weight behind them. The writing is superb, and the character development is top-notch. I’m invested in Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and the whole crew. They’re just so likable (and also, Aerith? She might just be my new favorite character).
The Combat – Action-Packed and Strategic
Now, I have to admit—coming from someone who is used to turn-based RPGs, the real-time action combat in FFVII Remake took a little getting used to. But once I got the hang of it, I couldn’t put it down. The blend of real-time fighting and tactical pauses to plan out attacks makes it thrilling. It’s fast, it’s dynamic, and it just feels satisfying when you pull off those Limit Breaks.
The Summons are incredible too. Watching a giant creature like Ifrit slam into enemies while you control Cloud’s sword slashes is chef’s kiss.
What I Missed from the Original
Okay, so I can’t talk about the Remake without admitting I’m missing out on the full experience of the original. There are moments in the game where I feel like there’s some backstory I’m just not getting. I know the original had some iconic scenes and plot twists that probably hit harder for those who’ve been with the FFVII saga for years. But honestly? The Remake still does a fantastic job of capturing the magic. It feels like an entirely fresh experience while paying homage to the original in some truly creative ways.
A New Experience for New Fans
If you're like me and never played the original Final Fantasy VII, FFVII Remake is an excellent entry point. You don’t need to have the nostalgic connection to the original to appreciate what this game brings to the table. The story, characters, and world are all incredible. And the gameplay? So much fun.
