One Punch Man: Season 1, Episode 1 Recap

A Hero Nobody Knows

A monstrous threat emerges in A-City as the terrifying Vaccine Man unleashes destruction, defeating heroes Lightning Max and Smile Man. Just when hope seems lost, a mysterious bald man named Saitama appears and effortlessly destroys Vaccine Man with a single punch. However, instead of celebrating, Saitama screams in frustration, lamenting the monotony of his overwhelming strength.

Saitama’s Origins: The Crablante Incident

The episode flashes back three years, revealing Saitama's humble beginnings. Unemployed and aimless, Saitama encounters Crablante, a man-turned-monster after consuming too much crab. The monster spares Saitama, explaining it seeks revenge on a boy with a large chin who vandalized it with permanent marker. When Crablante attacks the child, Saitama intervenes, killing the monster with nothing but his necktie, igniting his journey to becoming a hero.

The Colossal Brother’s Downfall

Returning to the present, Saitama faces another threat: a giant man created by the steroid Biceps Brachii King, developed by his scientist brother. The duo plans to conquer the world, but Saitama's interference leads to a tragic accident where the giant unknowingly kills his own brother. Enraged, the giant attacks Saitama, only to meet the same fate as others—a single punch. Saitama’s victory inadvertently destroys B-City, reinforcing the emptiness he feels from his unmatched strength.

Custom Cars and Subterranean Dreams

That night, Saitama encounters Super Custom YO649Z Mk. II, a monster obsessed with customizing cars. After an insult about his bald head, Saitama ends the encounter with another one-punch victory.

The next morning, Saitama dreams of battling the Subterranean People, a powerful race exterminating humanity. He finally feels alive as he fights them in an epic battle. However, he wakes to find the invasion real—only to be disappointed when the Subterranean King and his army surrender immediately after one effortless defeat.

The episode concludes with a mysterious cyborg, Genos, walking toward Z-City, setting the stage for the next chapter in Saitama’s journey.
