Red Dead Redemption, developed by Rockstar Games, takes place after the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, which serves as a prequel. While Red Dead Redemption 2 introduced us to Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang during their peak and decline, Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston, an ex-gang member, as he attempts to leave his outlaw past behind and protect his family.
1. Introduction: A Man Forced to Face His Past
The game begins in 1911, during a time when the lawless lands of the West are rapidly succumbing to modernization. John Marston, now a family man, has settled down on a ranch, leaving his outlaw life behind. However, the government—specifically two federal agents, Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham—has other plans. They kidnap Marston's wife Abigail and his son Jack to force him to track down and kill his former gang members, starting with Bill Williamson. John, with no other options, agrees to their demands, setting off to confront the gang that once was his family.

2. New Austin: Chasing Bill Williamson
John’s journey takes him to the harsh deserts of New Austin, where he finds Bill Williamson’s new gang terrorizing the local populace. Marston’s first attempt to confront Williamson goes poorly—he’s outnumbered, shot, and left for dead. Local rancher Bonnie MacFarlane rescues him, nursing him back to health. As a favor, he helps her around the ranch, beginning to earn the respect of the people in town.
To gain enough firepower and allies to take on Williamson, Marston works with colorful characters: Marshal Leigh Johnson, a noble but weathered lawman; Nigel West Dickens, a traveling con artist; Irish, a deceitful drunk; and Seth Briars, a grave robber. Each has their own role to play in Marston’s quest, and through their efforts, they launch an assault on Williamson’s fortress, but Williamson escapes to Mexico.
3. Escalation in Mexico: A Revolution and Betrayal
In pursuit of Williamson, John crosses the border into Mexico, where he becomes embroiled in a violent civil war. He finds himself caught between two factions: Colonel Agustin Allende, the corrupt military governor, and Abraham Reyes, a rebel leader fighting for freedom. Marston tries to navigate this complicated political landscape, hoping to use both sides to further his hunt for Williamson.
As he builds alliances, he finally learns that Williamson is hiding under the protection of Allende, along with another of Marston’s former gang members, Javier Escuella. After a series of missions, Marston manages to kill Williamson and capture Escuella. However, he’s double-crossed by Allende, who attempts to kill him, leading Marston to fully side with the rebels. Together, they overthrow Allende, and John kills both Allende and Williamson, satisfying part of his agreement with the government.
4. The Final Hunt: Dutch Van der Linde
With Williamson and Escuella dead, Marston believes he’s fulfilled his obligations to the government and hopes to reunite with his family. However, Ross and Fordham reveal that his debt isn’t fully repaid until he brings down Dutch Van der Linde, the former leader of the gang and a father figure to John. Dutch, like John, has resisted the government’s control but now leads a new gang that terrorizes the newly civilized lands.
John pursues Dutch through the mountains of West Elizabeth. Along the way, he witnesses Dutch’s descent into madness, as he holds onto an idealized vision of freedom and rebellion. In their final confrontation, Dutch dies by his own hand, falling to his death. His last words resonate with Marston, as Dutch expresses disillusionment with a world that no longer has a place for men like him.
5. Homecoming: A Taste of Peace
With Dutch dead, Marston is finally free. He returns to his family, ready to embrace a life of peace on the ranch. For a brief period, he finds contentment in working alongside Abigail and Jack. The game shifts pace as John takes on ordinary ranch duties, teaching Jack how to hunt and enjoying a life he’s long dreamed of but rarely experienced. This tranquility, however, is short-lived.
6. The Final Sacrifice: Government Retribution
Despite fulfilling his deal, the government is unwilling to let John Marston live peacefully. Ross leads a surprise raid on Marston’s ranch, arriving with a large group of soldiers to eliminate him. Realizing that he cannot escape his past, Marston sends Abigail and Jack to safety while he makes a final stand. In a heroic yet tragic moment, Marston walks out of the barn and faces overwhelming odds. He’s gunned down, sacrificing himself to save his family.
7. Epilogue: Jack Marston’s Revenge
The game’s epilogue occurs a few years later, with Jack Marston, now an adult, standing by the graves of his parents. Haunted by the loss of his father, Jack tracks down Edgar Ross, who has retired. In a fateful duel, Jack kills Ross, avenging his father. The cycle of violence continues, suggesting that while John tried to break free from his past, his actions ultimately left a legacy that Jack could not escape.
